Twirlettes are State Champions
The Saline Twirlettes captured many titles on November 13th at Milan High School at the NBTA (National Baton Twirling Association) State Championships. Thirty Twirlettes competed in individual and team competition. All the Advanced Twirlettes qualified for the National Majorette Contest and several new twirlers entered into the exciting world of competitive baton twirling.
One Twirlettes team captured the 2011 State Pre-teen dance twirl state championship. The team is comprised of team members; Jordan Caldwell, Christine Cauley, Amanda Coy, Andrea Doa, Erin Evans, Natalie Haubenstricker, Colleen Issel, and Julie Palmer.
The Junior national team won the 2011 Junior State Dance Twirl Sate Championship. Haley Williams, Chrissy Houle, Amber Reed, Dana Kalem, Mariah Austin, Kaylynn Austin, Christine Cauley, Jordan Caldwell, and Natalie Haubenstricker round out this team. Both these teams will compete during the year and take their routines back to nationals in the summer of 2011.
Advanced Twirlers had a successful day. Saline Junior Chrissy Houle won the STATE freestyle championship as well as 2nd in state solo, 3rd in strut and won the Int. 2-baton title. Senior Haley Williams won the Senior STATE best appearing title and Jr. Duet title with partner Colleen Issel, 2nd in strut and 3rd in state solo. EMU twirler, Conner Potter, won 4th is state solo , 2nd in state 2-baton and 2nd in state 3-baton. Freshman Amber Reed competed for the first time in the advanced division and did very well. Amber placed 3rd in state championship solo. All four of these ladies qualified for the National majorette contest. The best twirlers in the nation will compete in this event in July 2011.
Newcomer, Matthew Boyer, competed for the first time and won the Boy’s solo title. Matthew will continue his skills following in the footsteps of another national winner and Michigan Twirler Nathan Magyar( Michigan Junior). Matthew also won 4th in basic march.
Amanda Coy won the State 7-9 Best Appearing title as well as the Show Twirl title. Erin Evans won 2nd in the state show twirl division.
Intermediate twirlers faired as Amber Reed won the Jr. strut title, Amanda Coy won the Juv. Strut title. Amanda also won 2nd in her state solo. Mariah Austin won 3rd in state solo, 2nd best appearing and won the Beginner State strut title. Jordan Caldwell of Adrian won 3rd in Int. strut in the Pre-teen division while Dana Kalem won 3rd in the Junior division.
Colleen Issel, Dana Kalem, Mariah Austin, Natalie Haubenstricker and Abbey Fletcher won Beginner state titles. Colleen won the Preteen State Beginner solo and placed 3rd in strut. Abbey Fletcher won the Juvenile State Beginner solo the Novice strut title, placed 2nd in state best appearing, and won the beginner basic march title. Gracie Reilly won 3rd in the beginner state best appearing division while Natalie Haubenstricker won the Junior State Beginner strut title, placed 2nd in state beginner junior solo, and state best appearing. In the same division, Freshman Christine Cauley won 2nd in strut and best appearing. Saline Sophomore Dana Kalem won the Junior State Beginner Best Appearing title. Tecumseh Senior won the Teenage State Beginner Strut title.
The Twirlettes were excited to have many twirlers new to the competition world participate in the Special Beginner and Novice events. In the Novice divisions, Andrea Doa placed 6th in novice state strutting and solo while in State duet she placed 3rd with partner Julie Palmer. Julie Palmer took home the Pre-teen State novice solo title. While newcomer, Elise Koberl won 4th novice solo event. First grader, Izzy Strozeski won 3rd in state novice solo and 2nd in Beginner state best appearing. Another young twirler new to competition came home with a trophy. Four year old , Ruby Boyer won 3rd in basic strutting in the open event. Seven year old, Demi Hirschfield placed 5th in Beginner Best Appearing and 8th in novice state solo. Elise Renberg won 3rd in Basic strutting, and 6th in Novice solo while Kate Conley won 2nd in Special Beginner Solo. Chelsea resident, Cori Walworth participated for the first time in solo and basic strutting.
The Twirlettes were excited to have many twirlers compete at this state event. Although early in the season, the team had a very good showing and will keep working to build on skills and be prepared for the upcoming competitive season. Many of the same twirlers will compete at a Twirling Unlimited “Miss Holiday “contest in Ida, Michigan on December 11th.
The Junior State Champion team will perform on Dec. 4th at the University of Michigan halftime before participating in the Saline Holiday parade on the same day. December 17th the Twirlettes will host their annual holiday recital at the Saline Middle school starting at 7:00 p.m. This recital is free and open to the public. The ‘ NEW ALLIANCE” team that includes Twirlettes , Michigan Twirler Stacey Girbach and Virginia Twirler, Harlie Dale, will perform at the Dec. 23rd Michigan basketball game.
